Safety Advice for Vacation Rentals

When guests with small kids are choosing a vacation rental to book, one of the first and foremost considerations is safety. There are a few simple steps that can go a long ways to providing the needed assurance that your property is kid-friendly.

Marketing & communicating the safety precautions is a value add to potential guests. 100% of survey respondents (families with kids under 3) indicated that they are more likely to book a rental that calls out safety measures.

  1. All bookshelves and dressers need to be mounted and secured to walls. This prevents tipping, and potentially landing on a little one.

  2. Install retractable baby gates to keep stairs safe, while also avoiding a potential nuisance for guests who don’t have small kids. (bonus: these work for pets too)

  3. Minimize glass furniture, especially tabletops with sharp corners. If this isn’t feasible, provide covers for corners.

  4. Encourage guests to purchase the safety kit when selecting their baby gear. It includes corner covers, outlet covers, and latches for cabinets.

  5. Move cleaning supplies and harmful chemicals to high cabinets or locked closets. No need to keep them under the sink or in storage spaces littles can access.

  6. If there is a pool and baby gates can’t be added (totally get it), provide a contract supplement and review with guests. Ensure it notates how they can keep the home secure and prevent littles from escaping to the pool.

  7. Review this detailed checklist for a comprehensive safety guide.
